    Blu Ray wins!

    Link
The high-definition DVD war is all but over.

Hollywood's squabble over which of two technologies will replace standard DVDs skewed in the direction of Sony Corp. on Friday, with Warner Brothers casting the deciding vote in favor of the company's Blu-ray discs over the rival format, HD DVD.

In some ways, the fight is a replay of the VHS versus Betamax battle of the 1980s. This time, however, the Sony product appears to have prevailed.

Hmmmmm - I still reckon Microsoft could come up with something to bring HD DVD back from this.

Cost of players, plus the cost of transferring to making Blu Ray is still a factor, plus ISTR that Sony had said that Blu Ray would not be available for porn DVD releases. If that's still true, then there's still a "healthy" market for HD DVD out there.

You do see quite a few movies on Bluray in the shops these days, but almost none on HD-DVD

Next Xbox360 release will have an HD-DVD player incorporated, perhaps this may help?

Yup, if the XBox 360 had an in-built HD-DVD player then it would probably still be an open contest.

Most of the Blu Players in use are in the PS3.

Smart move by Sony - this is why the release of the PS3 was delayed.

Also, Sony own a major Hollywood studio, so most of the initial movie releases are from their own studio giving them a head start on content available for their players.

No way MS will ever do that now. The movie studios are desperate due to declining sales and will all eventually end up backing Blu Ray exclusively.

One of the main reasons MS didnt go for Blu Ray initially was because it uses Java!!

Had MS had the balls to include HDDVD in the Xbox 360, it would been game over for blu ray. One year advantage over PS3 and 15 million HDDVD units sold via the Xbox, but they didnt have the balls to do it..

Personally, it seems the battle is over. I don't give a damn who wins since by the time I want to buy a player, either it will be decided or dual-format plauers will be affordable (they already exist).

I thought that porn was the deciding factor in the VHS v Betamax war?? Sony have a bit of a track record when it comes to releasing dud formats.
Science isn't about why, it's about why not. You ask: why is so much of our science dangerous? I say: why not marry safe science if you love it so much. In fact, why not invent a special safety door that won't hit you in the butt on the way out, because you are fired. - Cave Johnson

Yes, it was one of the factors in VHS v Beta. Sony said "no porn on Beta", so the industry moved to VHS.

The costs of changing manufacture from standard DVD to HD DVD are much less than swapping from standard DVD to Blu Ray, which is why I'm still surprised that Blu Ray stands a chance of winning. But, with 70% of the movie producers tied in now, it looks like it could be all over bar the shouting.

I'm still waiting until it's a done deal, though - there are some studios on an exclusive deal with HD DVD, but no idea how long for or what happens if they want out. By the time I want a player, it'll be sorted one way or the other anyway.

I know not, exactly. Something to do with needing to change the frequency of laser burn? Someone who I worked with last year who knew such things went into detail about it, but it washed over me.
