    Train fares

Had to get a train from the beautiful Swindon station to Paddington yesterday.

Standard return ticket was a very reasonable £103

Not bad to stand up for an hour and travel 80 miles.

And the government has the cheek to say inflation is as high at 2%.

I have a local train platform just 500 yards from my house and the site I work on has its own little station, £9.50 return for 40 mile round trip.

It needs to be half the price to tempt me out of the car.
Science isn't about why, it's about why not. You ask: why is so much of our science dangerous? I say: why not marry safe science if you love it so much. In fact, why not invent a special safety door that won't hit you in the butt on the way out, because you are fired. - Cave Johnson

Not bad - only £1.2875 per mile. Makes the cost of petrol worthwhile - almost!

Occasionally I need to go to meetings in London at a few day's notice. £140 is not uncommon as the fare.

For that price I can hire a "man with a van" for a day to give me a lift while he has a day out in London.

(Yes, I do know £140 is nothing compared to London to <here> return bought on the day.)

Drivelling in TPD is not a mental health issue. We're just community blogging, that's all.

Do you not charge the client for these expenses?

It's personal professional development stuff - committees I sit on, attending workshops, seminars and the like. Granted MyLtdCo pays but it's a stupid amount of money to be paying to go to an otherwise free or cheap event.
