How much risk are you willing to take on?
How long can you tie the money up for?
Do you need to avoid tax on any gain?

Medium risk .. dont want to lose any money!.. but want to beat inflation and make a bit more

2 years or so, but would still want say access to the money if needed,
say a 1 month notice period.

Do you need to avoid tax on any gain?

Sounds like low risk to me. A cash ISA for you perhaps?

I'm making good money on metals, food commodities and emerging markets, but the risk of losing my money is med/high if it suddenly turns.

maxed out on the cash ISA, was thinking
commodities (metal and oil) and just maybe RBS shares.
            (undervalued I think) ..

£500,000 to old Brown eye will give you good odds for another failed public sector IT project worth bullions.

Start with a course on how to make money investing in [whatever floats your boat] - then take it from there.

I'm booked on a course to learn naked puts and covered calls - it's high risk - which is why I'm doing a course in it first.
