Wasn't the cause related to GNER or it's parent going bust?

        National 'Express'

One franchise was acquired by NE. I just hope that they don't run it down like their coach services. BTW, GNER didn't go bust. It was replaced as a rail franchise on the route to NE and Scotland by the well-known coach and (now seems) train operator. GNER operated one of the most efficient services but was a victim of negligence by Railtrack which failed to maintain the tracks and as a result GNER trains suffered derailments and bad publicity. On top of that, slimey NL fan Richard Branson (who always fancied the franchise) was allowed to operate alternative services from/to Scotland despite GNER being charged an arm and a leg for the 'privilege' of just that. Nail in the coffin was that as soon as the Gov't found out that GNER's parent company Sea Containers of the US had problems, it increased the operating fee (£ 12 bn)while shortening the length of the franchise (7 yrs?). State theft on the magnitude of the £ 10 bn windfall tax imposed on utilities and the £ 25 bn tax on the telecom companies for 3G licences. Gordon Brown is a modern day Ali Baba.

How could they 'run it down' anymore than it currently is. The ex One rolling stock is like stepping into the 1970s.

            Be grateful.

If it wasn't for the EU they would still be using slam door trains from the 50's.

Nothing wrong with slam door trains. At least you could get off and start walking if the damn thing got stuck behind a twig on the line wating to be picked up by some hairy arsed oaf.
