Most American forums and blogs use a loathsome soppy great "man in the moon" smiley face totally at odds with the sly innuendo one often wants to convey with one.

I guess it's because irony and subtlety is not something a typical Yank is comfortable with, and whoever designed the almost whistful and simple-minded looking monstrosity was also devoid of any sense of humour.
