The concept of regression testing

I just got allocated a regression bug where build and base give identical numbers. seems both are wrong and users trying to squeeze in a demand - though scope closed months ago.

christ, this takes me back to a conversation last week about this very thing! i thought regression testing was the ability to backup should it all go tits up! in fact its odd term which i feel is more suited to the name Compatibility or Operational testing...

Altho, i'm an IT Services person, not software development! so i'm probably very wrong!

It is a weird term. Perhaps better would be "Make sure it still does what it used to do before someone dicked about with it"
