    Hate crimes soar after bombings

Religious hate crimes, mostly against Muslims, have risen six-fold in London since the bombings, new figures show.
There were 269 religious hate crimes in the three weeks after 7 July, compared with 40 in the same period of 2004.

Most were verbal abuse and minor assaults, but damage to mosques and property with a great "emotional impact" also occurred, police said.

Met Police Assistant Commissioner Tarique Ghaffur said he had never seen so much anger among young Muslims.

It [religious hate crimes] can lead to these communities completely retreating

Communities were particularly frustrated by the increased use of stop-and-search and the new "shoot-to-kill to protect" policy of dealing with suicide bombers, he said.

"There is no doubt that incidents impacting on the Muslim community have increased."

And he warned: "It can lead to these communities completely retreating and not engaging at a time when we want their engagement and support."
Mr Ghaffur revealed that in the first three days after suicide bombers killed 52 people and injured 700 more, there were 68 "faith hate" crimes in London alone.

    Racial profiling

The alarming figures emerged as Home Office minister Hazel Blears held the first in a series of meetings on Tuesday with Muslim community groups across the country.

Those meetings come amid increasing concerns that young Muslims are being targeted by police in stop-and-search operations.

Ahead of the meeting, Ms Blears pledged that Muslims would not be discriminated against by police trying to prevent potential terror attacks.

She insisted that "counter-terrorism powers are not targeting any community in particular but are targeting terrorists".

She also said she opposed police use of racial profiling, adding that all stops and searches should be based on good intelligence, not just the colour of someone's skin.

Mr Ghaffur also revealed that the specialist unit dealing with serious and organised crime had lost 10% of its staff to the bombings inquiry.
Communities were particularly frustrated by the increased use of stop-and-search and the new "shoot-to-kill to protect" policy of dealing with suicide bombers, he said.

And the indiscriminate bombing of civilians by ISLAMIC fundamentalists isnt a race hate crime?
I am not qualified to give the above advice!

Correct, that is a religious hate crime, Islam not being a race and all that.

But on a similar note, that poor lad who was killed in Liverpool is being touted as the victim of a race hate crime, but the white lad who was stabbed and killed by a black guy on a bus in London on the same day (for asking him to stop throwing chips at the passengers) isn't a race hate crime victim and isn't newsworthy any more. Perhaps only white people can be racists?

Sorry, my bad, I just meant to put hate crime.

The black kid who was killed had been taunted for some time about his race, he walked away with his white girlfriend to anothr bus stop, was followed and killed. Numerous witnesses say racist taunts were thrown at him from all angles. Sound Racialy motivated to me.
The bloke with the chips was throwing them at anyone, no evidence that he was targetting whites.

Good point, Lucifer. I remember a conversation a couple of years back in which a white woman jokingly accused a black woman of being racist. "No", replied the black woman, "I can't be racist; I'm black".

It does seem to be a common view that only whites can be racist.

Not every crime committed by a member of another race is treated as a race hate crime. The Liverpool incident is being described as such because the guy was approached because he had a white girlfriend and racist insults were made. The incident on the London bus was not racist at all. The killer had been throwing chips at everyone - the only person who intervened (who happened to be white) was stabbed to death.

I don't think it's the chip throwing that's the important aspect of this case, there is the small matter of the fatal stabbing. Now, maybe he would have also stabbed a black guy who asked him to stop throwing chips around, maybe not. I suspect not. It's hard not to think that the guy died primarily because of his colour.
