Serious question - Where would you choose to live in or near (in the UK) for quality of life, and a steady contracting income, except London? And why?

Mrs RH and I are entertaining the idea of leaving this bizarre place next year. Can't see us raising miniRHs in the city, and as nice as SW London can be, it's not nice enough for the long term.

Obviously, given my line of work, it would have to have a good selection of media/agency/design firms around to work with.

south coast, Poole / Purbeck way. lovely part of the world, great quality of life, easy commute to Reading and reasonable links to London. heading back out that way as soon as Ribena Socialist is of school age.

I voted other, because the obvious place to stay (midlands) wasn't really an option. Somewhere which is an hour from London, an hour from Brum, an hour from the M4 corridor (Reading/Slough) an hour from Cambridge and an hour from Oxford is not a bad place to pick up contracts from.

That is the Bedford / Milton Keynes area. Yes, this ideal place had to have a downside.

Why can't we choose 2?

I dont particularly want to move out of Sunderland, as it's class....but I *would* move to York or Manchester. Particularly Manchester.

Who in their right ******* mind would move to Reading though?!!!

I think you need to stay where you are. You will only find that kind of work in major cities so unless you want a weekly commute you need to be in or near one of those cities.
London is probably the best bet for you though you may find enough work in Manchester, Leeds or even Glasgow. I would suggest the daily commute for these would mean a better quality of life if you dont need the city buzz.
