Working in Cumbria / The lakes

Thinking of a change of scenery and possibly moving there (well that's our goal over the next few years).. just wondering if anyone already lives/works there, and what the job market is like there (business IT, project management, service delivery, etc)...?

    Any advice?

Lovely area, sod all work. Preston, Manchester and Liverpool are probably your best bets for work but long commutes or working away are pretty inevitable imo.

Yes the Lake District, that other hub of Financial, Industrial and High Tech services.

Yeah, I worked in Preston and a guy there used to commute from the Lake District. There is work in those places if you're not fussy, but possibly better to move somewhere in Lancashire or Cheshire and have the Lake District, Snowdonia and the Peak District in easy reach on days off, rather than dump yourself in the middle of nowhere and have to drive out every day.

The only big employers up there is the Gas Terminal or Vickers in Barrow or Selafield the Nuclear Station.

Pretty grim places really, and thats from me a Ex-Pat Barrovian

I was posted up there for 12 months (barrow-in-furness)

wanted to stay and looked into buying a house in the Lake District, theres a 2hr commute to manchester for work, not much going on in kendal, preston, etc.. you might be better off slightly further down the m6 nearer manchester.

the only employers round there are the gas terminal (centrica), sellafield , and tronics.

BAE are big there though if you can get in there you'll be ok.
