    How to speak to foreigners

The court heard Darren Upton had written a letter to Judge Sally Cahill QC saying he wasn’t “a typical inmate of prison”.

But the judge said: “That simply demonstrates your arrogance continues. You are typical. Inmates of prison are people who are dishonest. You are a thoroughly dishonestly man motivated by your own selfish greed.”

Works on my MacBook - it's just a YouTube video, which is a Flash player.

          Well, I have some sympathy.

I find that whenever I am talking to someone with a strong accent, involunatarily I start talking with the same intonation and metre as they use.

They usually think that I am taking the piss out of them.

Note: I haven't watched the whole clip so don't know if he was just being a noddy.

I've been in Texas all week, half of the locals simply DO NOT understand if I speak in my normal unaccented British English. I have to either (a) slow it down to the point of comedy, or (b) fake a mild American accent which makes me sound like a sub-par version of Hugh Laurie in House. Highly irritating.

Speak very slowly and very loudly to Johnny Foreigner, it's all they understand.
