Who should win the Mercury Prize 2008?

Poll on the way. My first one as well, so bear with me while I figure this out...

OK, looks like polls are limited to 10 options, so in order to sacrifice 3 of the 12 nominees (and make way for the obligatory AndyW option) I went for the top 9 according to current betting odds.

    The other nominees are:

    Estelle - Shine
    Adele - 19
Portico Quartet - Knee Deep In The North Sea
    22
    Burial - Untrue
    9.09%
    2
    Radiohead - In Rainbows
    4.55%
    1
Elbow - The Seldom Seen Kids
    13.64%
    3
Laura Marling - Alas I Cannot Swim
    0.00%
    0
The Last Shadow Puppets - The Age Of The Understatement
    4.55%
    1
    Neon Neon - Stainless Style
    4.55%
    1
Rachel Unthank & The Winter Set - The Bairns
    0.00%
    0
Robert Plant & Alison Krauss - Raising Sand
    9.09%
    2
British Sea Power - Do You Like Rock Music
    0.00%
    0
    AndyW on his pink oboe
    54.55%
    12
    Estelle - Shine
    0.00%
    0
    Adele - 19
    0.00%
    0
Portico Quartet - Knee Deep In The North Sea
    0.00%
    0

    The poll is expired.

Where are we going? And what’s with this hand basket?

I must be getting old - I have only heard of Radiohead and Robert Plant.

You left out Estelle who is possibly the most talented out of them all. She's also been around a very long time (which I only realised recently)
Oh, I’m sorry….I seem to be lost. I was looking for the sane side of town. I’d ask you for directions, but I have a feeling you’ve never been there and I’d be wasting my time.

As I said, them's the odds.

To be honest I can't figure out why the odds are against her. Perhaps it's because she's popular at the moment and therefore "unfashionable" as far as the Mercury Awards are concerned. That's probably a very cynical view though.

I'll count that as a vote for Estelle then

The Burial album is superb. The lad has a style all of his own, even within the dubstep genre. Deserves to win for the sheer originality of the album. I would gush a bit more about it but you fogies wouldn't understand

Burial has got something very special but Estelle's album should beat the pants off little Laura Marling's. I'd like to see that actually.

Last Shadow Puppets for me. Almost the sound of the 60's...
              Older and ...well, just older!!

Is this poll about music or groups/bands?

I must be getting really old

Dont think I have heard any of the offerings, but had heard rave reviews about the plant collaboration.
I am not qualified to give the above advice!
