I've heard some people say that a .22 magnum or a .17 do too much damage to a squirrel, so they use a regular .22 long rifle," Schaffer said. "I haven't found that a magnum or .17 is any more damaging, and if you're honest, a .22 long rifle is designed for 50-yard shots.

"I like to try for head shots on squirrels, so you're talking about a target area roughly the size of a quarter. Even if you shoot for the chest, it's only a couple of inches wide. That doesn't leave much room for error at 75-100 yards."

He rarely uses a shotgun because of the noise.
