    African scene

The scene is one of migrating wildebeest gathering restlessly on the shores of the great Mara river. Distant rain can be heard. On the other side of the bank lays the prospect that once parched and barren earth has been turned to lush and fertile pasture. It has always been this way. But remnants of earlier pioneers lay scattered around the riverbank and the majority wait hungry as their numbers swell to epic proportions. There is safety in numbers, but danger and the rewards less too, and when the move happens it will occur brutally and swiftly. All look to each other and wonder when the stampede will start.

      Outside Lidl this morning?
Who has time? Who has time? But then if we do not ever take time, how can we ever have time?

And now we are witness one of the most spectacular sights on the Serengeti. Wildebeest having been driven half mad by group indecision suddenly surge forward in such numbers that even the deadliest of predators must avoid the thrashing hooves. Will their momentum be checked by the increasingly slippery riverbank and predators lying in wait? Any weakness will be seized upon without mercy. Early pioneers enjoy the virgin grasses on the opposite bank, while followers risk life and limb and the hooves of their own kind. Such is the brutal fight for survival on the plains of the Serengeti.

            Another African scene

"A woman accused of adultery has been stoned to death by Islamists in Somalia.

The 23-year-old woman was buried up to her neck in front of hundreds of people in a square in Kismayu and stones were hurled at her head.

She was dragged out of the hole three times to see if she was dead.

When a relative and others surged forward to rescue her, guards opened fire and killed a child."
            The vegetarian option.
