Things to do on the bench

Apart from staying, in bed, watching daytime tv and drinking endless cups of tea whilst applying for non existant jobs on jobserve...

...what do you do to while the hours away?

    Suggestions on a postcard

I can't help as I have never been on the bench. Sorry.

Read news, surf, Gym, look at courses and plot you skill enhancement plan, bang one out, send random emails to people, day trade if you have funds, wake up late and still be walking about in your boxers at 2pm, watching Jeremy Kyle and feel good about yourself, usual stuff

The court heard Darren Upton had written a letter to Judge Sally Cahill QC saying he wasn’t “a typical inmate of prison”.

But the judge said: “That simply demonstrates your arrogance continues. You are typical. Inmates of prison are people who are dishonest. You are a thoroughly dishonestly man motivated by your own selfish greed.”

I learned an important lesson over 10 weeks this summer. Limit yourself to an hour (or less) a day jobhunting. You could (like me) spend a lot of time returning to the job sites throughout the day looking to see if anything new has come online. The market doesn't move that quickly, so spend your time more fruitfully.

After a while I found it useful for me to have a routine of sorts. Allocate your time in blocks like you might do at work, and spend X hours doing different things, even if some is spent watching telly.
Mix it up a bit between chilling out things, and productive things.
Target a sporting event that you want to do (10k, marathon, cycling, rock climbing, saturday footy league, whatever) and train towards it.
Apply for a distance learning course and learn some non-techy skills; a language, an A level in History, blah blah.

Assume that you'll be on the bench for a few months, and if you get a job sooner, shelve the course and come back to it later.
I agree it's hard trying to find useful things to occupy yourself with for an indetermined length of time, as not many things lend themselves to being picked up and put down like that. Most useful activities require some form of commitment, but there are some things out there.
            Good luck

Try a different flavour of pot noodle each day. Follow with a wink. Analyse the correlation between a good wink and the noodle flavour eaten. Chart result in a graph. Post graph on CUK for all to see.
