A computer administrator has been jailed

A computer administrator has been jailed for 18 months for possessing nearly half a million indecent images of children

    He should have been garrotted

"He was identified as part of an ongoing operation targeting people who are sharing and downloading indecent images of children through peer-2-peer file sharing on the Internet. "

I hope they got those at the other peer.....

Why don't they use a virus to track the images, and use this otherwise pest of a technology for a good use?
Feist - 1234. One camera, one take, no editing. Superb. How they did it

I know this is the one topic you're not meant to say anything on, other than "burn the witch", but...

I've always thought that being imprisoned for having images on your PC seemed a bit...harsh?

I appreciate the "it's people like that who perpetuate the child p*rn market" argument, and I guess anything we can do to stop that is good....but isn't it good that these people are sorting out their sick "urges" by using photos already out there, than doing it to real kids?
And let the police concentrate on the people making the photos?

or have studies shown that this kind of thing actually leads to them doing it to real kids?

Fortunately I dont know a lot on this subject.

Obviously in this case, half a million photos, the guy has clearly gone way past any point of no return and all that...but that result about the cartoon image....I just genuinely wasn't sure about that.

mmm Yeah. I am against 'thought crime' also. It's the people who actually do it that should be targeted.

Half a million images is way more than my porn stash.

I bet Atw has a lot more than that.
How did this happen? Who's to blame? Well certainly there are those more responsible than others, and they will be held accountable, but again truth be told, if you're looking for the guilty, you need only look into a mirror.

I think that to knowingly view an image of a child being abused in any shape or form is plain evil and they deserved to be severely punished.

Yes they may only be looking, but a child has suffered - God knows what, just so that they can get their kicks.

We need to protect our children and send out a very clear message to people that this behavior is TOTALLY unacceptable.

I agree with what you say, but this guy was also charged on 30 counts of taking indecent photos of children, so 18 months is a very light sentence IMO.

That is a very good point, SallyAnne. I don't know about this case, but in general ISTM that somebody who is jailed just for posessing images, is being punished not for what he actually did but for another different crime (which I will allow really is evil - the point is that it's not the same crime).

PC rules and nobody dares to argue that there is a difference. Or (worse?) only a woman can argue (ta, Sal) because "everybody knows" it's only men that do these things .... and any man who suggests that just possessing images might not be a jailing offence, probably had better shred his hard drive first, because people will want to check it....

Thought crime, indeed: jail him not for what he did but for what he would obviously like to do!

BTW isn't killing the Prime Minister treason? So what about saying in a forum that it would be nice if that happened? What about wishing it? What about simply not being against the idea? Some traitors around here, then...this is not off track, it is one of the tracks: is it a crime to think of something that you want, but not do it?

With half-a-million photos, I'd assume he was also selling them on. I'd garotte his peer as well.
