Net immigration up 237,000

The large rise was blamed on fewer people deciding to leave the country last year while some 577,000 arrived, the equivalent of 1,580 every day.

With only 340,000 heading out of the country it meant net migration was up 46,000 on the 2006 figure to top 237,000, its highest since 2004.

The figures prompted fresh calls for annual limit on immigration.

The low emigration was mainly due to fewer Britons deciding to leave, down from 207,000 to 171,000 last year.

Separate figures showed asylum applications rose by 15 per cent to 25,800 in the year up to September 2008.

The addition to the British population calls into question the Government's claim that it will not let the population pass 70million.

UK is becoming very unattractive from economics point of view so lots of Polish people are coming back - I am not sure this sort of movement is counted well at all.

Either way the UKs problem is not the extra competition in the jobs market, it's the fact that so many good things got outsourced that UK does not make much anymore. Not suprising when estimated 1 in 7 of population teenagers worked at some point in McDonalds.
