    None IT Contractors

OK I know this forum is headed "The IT Contractor Portal", but I come here because I can get a range of views on the issues of being a Contractor and I have also picked up some excellent advice.

My field is health and safety (not 'elf and safety, I take a sensible approach to issues). I'm currently contracted to a major employer in the North East, however having had to set up my own company, I also do some work in the evenings and weekends for other clients.

With more and more fields relying on contracting as a way of employing, I just wondered if there many other "None IT" contractors here on the board?

    Do you mean "non-IT" contractors?

I have the mentality of a small child too, but it's not something I'd want someone seeing if they wandered up to my desk...

Curiously, none of the posts in this thread show an avatar. I've noticed that in a few other threads.

edit: DOH! Now they're all showing up, including GCR99's big hard and clever avatar.

(I'm using IE v8 beta, which seems to have all kinds of flaky bugs. So that probably accounts for the problem.)

Do you have them switched off?

There are certainly a few non-contractors round here.

I'm an IT contractor, but I'm interested to know how you go about becoming a Health and Safety specialist.

What sort of qualifications do you need, and how long does it take to become one.

Seems to me in this day and age nothing can get done without some kind of H&S check, must be a good industry to be in.

Chap I sit on the train with does H&S for banks. He says it is fine UNTIL someone has an accident! His boss had a workman die. The workman was not doing as told - but some barrister gave him a going roughing up in court. A most unpleasant experience. And probably quite rightly too.....
