    Big moon

    http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sciencete...-15-years.html

If the shortening days are getting you down, be sure to catch a glimpse of tonight's striking full moon.

It will appear 14 per cent bigger than usual and a stunning 30 per cent brighter thanks to a rare, natural coincidence.

Each month the moon orbits the Earth and tonight it will skim by at its closest distance for the last 15 years.

              How High The Moon ?
Hey Ho - The Moon ?

              Its spins - Silently
              Since Earth Time began

              The December sunset
              Calls the Moon into view

              Sometimes I see a little
              Somtimes I understand

              How High The Moon ?

At the time Earth formed 4.5 billion years ago, other smaller planetary bodies were also growing.

One of these hit earth late in Earth's growth process, blowing out rocky debris.

A fraction of that debris went into orbit around the Earth and aggregated into the moon.

I've been looking forward to this for ages. My mate who owns the local pub will be switching off the lights to get a perfect view. There'll be lots of drunken astronomy geeks in our local tonight.

Are you sure it wasn't a previous civilisation built a monstrous nuclear reactor and accidentally blew the old earth to bits?
