    iPhone unlocking

My daughter wants an iPhone for her birthday but is on an Orange contract.

There seems to be some conflicting info on whether the unlocking works or not, anyone unlocked their iPhone, if so what worked, and do the apple updates break the unlocking?

    Thanks

The only reason to get an iPhone 3G is for the unlimited data access (internet) provided by O2 in the £35 package deal. So if the unlocked phone works with the Orange sim card, you've got to make sure that your Orange contract provides unlimited data downloads.

Why not just move her number across to O2? That's the easiest thing to do.

Good point, but it's the unlimited texts that her current package has that's more important to her. Kids!

Not much point to having an iPhone without the data bundle IMHO.

Also, wouldnt you lose stuff like the visual voicemail? Thought this was particular to O2 as an iPhone-specific thing.

You can add unlimited texts to the iPhone tariff, but it'll cost £7.50 extra per month - she might have to clean an extra chimney or two each week to pay for it

iPhone is horrendous for texting. You can't even forward messages, or do picture messaging (you have to email instead).
