    Signs of broken Britain

'Of those questioned, 29% said they are less happy now than they were as a child and one in five said they felt like crying "often" or "always".

Almost half (47%) said they were regularly stressed. Young people tell us that family is key to their happiness, yet too often we find they don't have this crucial support

    Martina Milburn, Prince's Trust

The feelings of negativity among those who took part in the survey were higher among those not in work, education or training.

Young people who had left school but did not have a job or a place on a training course were twice as likely to feel that their life had no purpose.

Key to levels of happiness, were relationships with family and friends, although health, money and work were also important. '

With so much family breakdown and single parenthood actively encouraged by the benefits system(a single parent can get 5,000 pounds a year more than a married parent in benefits... as per article last week) it's no wonder that almost a third of kids appear to hate living.
The obvious solution here is with the Tory policy of encouraging marriage and stable loving families through the tax and benefits system IMO. Roll on 2010 and hopefully we can start to repair 'broken Britain'. For many children though 2010 may be too late, unfortunately as 2009 could be 'suicide' Britain.

Well, they ought to sit down with a cup of tea and a good book.

    Wha'd'y'mean they can't read?

That would be why DC called fathers feckless then. which is why I will not be voting for him.

So, most people are at least as happy, surely a positive thing?

Plus, doesn't everyone get biased by nostalgia, even those brought up in post-war rationing, or in freezing houses with no heating seem to remember such times fondly.

        Analysis: pointless

We are talking here about young adults and 29% is hardly a small minority of unhappy, potentially suicidal young people, and as a caring socialist I am surprised at your flippant response...NOT!! We ignore these problems at our peril, because unstable adults will mean more crime, misery, drugs, suicide etc. After 11 years of the caring socialists this is quite an indictment of their failed social policies.

I am surprised that anyone is happier as an adult.

I mean the schools are still off and if I were a child I would be down the park with jumpers for goalposts, instead here I am writing a pishy test harness for a pishy bit of code in a pishy office.

Actually I'm considerably happier as an adult, I didn't enjoy being a child after the age of about 10... probably for the same reason that I'm a real nerd who would rather code than interact with people, which is great when you work as a software developer but bad when you are a teenager

Where did suicidal come from? The quote was "29% are less happy", not "29% are depressed and suicidal". If less than 1/3 of young adults are less happy after growing up under a Labour regime, that means over 2/3 must have been remained as happy or become happier - a rousing success for Tony and Gordon!

                This should be fun...

I understand exactly what you are saying, and this is all the more reason why these young adults need the support which comes from stable family relationships as they adjust into adulthood.

Having lost young friends to suicide, perhaps that's why I can see more worrying signs than yourself in these figures.
