If you have too many interests in life

If you have too many interests in life, you can't concentrate and get really good at one. You get stretched and thin. Worn out.

If you havn't enough interests in life you get boring, stale and ossified.

I have just picked up a new interest and am afraid I may have to give something up. Not sh@gging though. never that

Some guy back in the 80s became a bit too wrapped up in conversing on usenet forums. He was amazingly witty and erudite etc, and would take part in every discussion thread going. But eventually it got rather too compulsive and of course time consuming. So he lost his job and family etc, and ended up literally on the street.

It was a well known case apparently, although I don't recall the guy's name. In fact he probably wasn't the only one. I bet the same happens to loads of people who let themselves be too carried away by online games, or Facebook, or CUK

Well now you have reminded me about a story I read as a kid.

Perfect wife and mum in a rural setting, the local priest realises she is extremely bright and teaches her to read. She end up becoming very well read, bored with rural life and spends 23 hours a day curled up in bed with books thinking about high-blown ideas whilst the hubby goes hungry and kids stay dirty.
      must find that story

How about combining interests. E.g. sh@gging whilst learning a language. No need to drop one then...an interest I mean, not dropping one whilst sh@gging.

To make the obvious joke, isn't AtW the burnt out remnant of that guy?

I don't know if you can count that an interest once you're married. An essential part of a healthy marriage (keep telling her that) but on a higher plane than a mere hobby...
