    Germany Out of Gas- Offical

    From the FT Online ...

Eon, the German energy group, warned that Russian gas deliveries to Germany , Gazprom’s biggest foreign buyer, via Ukraine could collapse altogether by late on Tuesday afternoon.

As reductions in Russian gas supplies spread deep into Europe on one of the coldest days of the winter, Naftogaz, Ukraine’s state gas company, said it would resume gas talks in Moscow on Thursday, raising hopes of a compromise in the dispute.

    German Billionaire commits suicide

Adolf Merckle, one of Germany’s wealthiest men, has been found dead after weeks of talks with creditors about a financial crisis in his business empire.

Mr Merckle’s death – said by a spokesperson to be a suicide and partly blamed on the financial crisis – calls into question the fate of the many companies he controls, including Ratiopharm, the generics drugs maker, and Heidelberger Cement.

I'm glad the Netherlands has it's own gas fields. Could get rather chilly otherwise.

Quite a good interview here with one of the SAP founders and also what he thinks of Merckle:

I believe UK gets 15% of energy needs from gas : and 80% of that from Russia. When will we suffer? Should we invade NL just in case?

But he said Germany could cope with any shortages. "Gas storage sites are full. And Germany gets its gas from different sources, for example from Norway or the Netherlands. Supplies from there could be increased," he said.

I thought France and Germany had vast liquid gas storage depots for just such an eventuality as this.

unlike the UK of course, which for cost cutting reasons omitted to build any and therefore has enough stored gas to last about a week or less

Ukraine mistakenly believed once they left the CIS they could have the best out of the EU and still get energy supplies from Russia at Russian domestic prices. Even now the Ukraine is getting a huge discount on wholesale prices much cheaper than EU customers and then it trebles the price for their own consumers. Naftogaz has more than enough money to pay Gazprom. It’s strange because if I don’t pay my gas bill I would be cut off. I couldn’t claim British Gas is acting on political grounds. The Ukraine cuts of the gas supply to the EU in order to get sympathy. The Ukrainian people have paid for the gas, the Ukraine government should pass on the money.

BBC News 24 have just said 3% of its Gas requirements come from Russia so shouldnt be effected, seems awfully low %, are they mistaken?

Either way, all this disruption in the world, first Gaza, now Russian Gas, seems a bit suspect, dastardly ploy by shady men in power to raise Oil and Gas prices and stimulate weapons/oil/gas spending by invoking conflicts?

to the "Germany Out of Gas" thread title

Firstly, they only say that deliveries could collapse, not that they have done, or definitely will.

Secondly, there's no suggestion that Russia is Germany's sole source of gas.

Therefore, there is nothing whatsoever in the story to support the assertion that Germany is "Out of Gas."
