The immigrants aren't going home, they're signing on.

Polish workers losing their UK jobs in the economic downturn are choosing not to return home but to stay and take advantage of the generous benefits system.

Immigrants from eastern Europe who have worked in Britain for 12 months or more can claim the full range of UK state benefits, including child and housing benefit and jobseekers' allowance.

This is because benefit handouts in Poland are a fraction of those available in the UK. Child benefit for a first child in Britain is £20 a week, compared with around £3 per week in Poland.

So now we are even importing the unemployed?

Wow 20 pound a week. So generous....
I've seen much of the rest of the world. It is brutal and cruel and dark, Rome is the light.

Not bad if you have 5 kids, have your rent paid, all your bills paid and get disability benefit for "depression"?

Certainly a lot more than you would get in Poland.

Another example of Social policy gone bonkers.

Whilst I do have a soft spot for the Poles if they cannot find gainful employment in the UK labour market then I would limit their Social assistance to having their bus ticket purchased back to their homes in Poland.

They are welcome to return to start employment in the UK come the upswing later this year.

If nobody wants them to claim benefits then they shouldn’t be made to pay tax and NI contributions.
And what exactly is wrong with an "ad hominem" argument? Dodgy Agent, 16-5-2014

Paying NI is not and never has been an automatic entitlement to Social Benefits : the DHSS can exercise a 'margin of appreciation' is the phrase they use , when assesing claimants applications - in this case they may deem the claimant has better prospects of fidning employment in their home town in Poland.

How much tax and NI does someone on min wage pay in a year given tax credits and their tax allowance?

Sure, but it's not exactly fair to make people pay contributions and then tell them to f**k off as soon as they claim. That's why I believe social security contributions should be voluntary for everybody.
