I see the doctor this afternoon, but what will he say (poll on its way). I've had a cough since 31st December. I don't smoke. The cough is slightly productive, sometimes tickly. I'm getting feverish every now and then, but most of the time feel ok. Over recent days I've been feeling short of breath. I experience mild pain in my chest when I cough.

The fact that you feel rough, then better (ish) means your bodies immune system is fighting it off.
Thats good because it shows you dont have AIDS
But its bad because it could go on for months. Years probably.
In fact , you will probably feel rough until you die, assuming you live that long

Sounds like a chest infection. Had this a couple of years back. Not a lot they can do, just give you something for the pain and something to fight the infection. Think it was just super strength antibiotics and paracetemol (sp?) but as I say it was a couple of years ago.
I'd say you're looking at about a week off unfortunately.
