Another great New Labour IT project

    http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/health/7850619.stm

The introduction of computerised NHS patient records in England could be hit by more delays, MPs warn.

The Committee on Public Accounts has thrown fresh doubt on a 2015 deadline for the ambitious £12bn project.

Its chairman said that even in trusts already using parts of the system, staff were unimpressed and the cost to the NHS was uncertain.

"Everyone recognises the potential of the programme and is frustrated at the delays, however, we are getting to the point where, having spent so much money both in funding the system and keeping it running, the time is quickly approaching to make tough decisions on what the future of the project should be."

No doubt heading for a £20+ bn piece of shelfware.

I just can't see what is so bleedin hard about writing this system, there were already client server based applications being used ( GPASS & Vision ) in most surgeries.

The basic datamodel was built, business domain code built, all they had to do was upgrade it to be 3 tier, make sure the code was scalable and put in more security. That is a big project but it's not a 10 year multi billion pound project.

Everyone knows the 'great rewrite' never works, but hey, it fills plenty of pockets.

It's a big money laundering operation.

£12bn could just about pay for the most ambitious of the Severn Barrage options, inclusive of corruption costs.

£12bn would have saved a lot of lives if it was spent on better patient care directly.

Except the NHS is full of people trying to make sure it runs according to their wishes not patients, the government or anyone elses.

You can’t get on it. They always ask for ‘previous NHS experience’. That’s why it keeps failing. As Albert Einstein says, ‘No problem can be solved from the same level of consciousness that created it’, and as one of our fellow CUK’ers says, ‘stupidity means doing the same thing time and time again and expecting a different result’.
