    Recession and Music

Does a crap economy bring out the best in British Music? The 70s had Zep, Deep Purple, Black Sabbath and so on. The late 80’s and early 90s downturn gave us indie rock; the La’s, the Bunnymen and so on. The North's best music seemed to come from boredom and economic doom and gloom. A lot of the stuff in between was tulipe. OK, Radiohead are pretty good, but Coldplay are just a tulipe imitation band playing indie-for-the-platinum-card-generation. Maybe now we’re in for some brilliant new music. Maybe we should hand out guitars to scruffy looking teenagers and see what they can do?

It's funny you should mention Coldporridge and Echo & BM in the same post.

They are to E&BM what Oasis are to The Beatles

It also shows that with a few notable exceptions, few decent bands come out of the South East

The great mid-sixties (Beatles/Stones/Who/etc), all developed while we'd never had it so good. According to MacMillan anyway.

Yep, but my dad was in Liverpool in the 60s and he says that the music was brilliant but the economy was crap. Kids started playing music in bars because they had f**k all else to do.

Which brings me to another example; the undertones.

Didn't the 70's recession allow Punk and Heavy Metal the get established (at least the NWOBHM)?

Cool, we need something to shake up the turgid mass that is todays music scene?

Yes, you're thinking along my lines.
