    Gordon Brown said the pure free market era was over.

    Gordon Brown has admitted that tougher action to curb the financial markets should have been taken 10 years ago, when he was chancellor.

    Maybe he's cleverer than we think. He's always been a proper socialist, unlike Blair. So by letting everything explode, he can now proceed with his real agenda. Throw the baby out with the bathwater and bring in proper socialism.

      The prime minister also said the era of laissez faire capitalism was over but insisted it would not be replaced by so-called 'big government', adding: "I don't know what we'll actually call it. Maybe 'fat government', or 'chunky government'.

      "My personal favourite is 'so-powerful-you-won't-be-able-to-go-for-a-piss-without-my-permission government."
