Hello and advice please

Hi all,

As you can guess by the user name I'm a newbie.

I'm looking to start contracting but I'm a bit confused on where to start.

I've seen a lot contracts on Jobserve etc... (desktop, server support) which I'd be more than capable of doing.

How do I get started in this contracting thing? Do I hand in my notice and try to find a contract while working my months notice or find a contract before handing in my notice. Also, what do I do about getting paid? Is it best to start a limited company or just go under a umbrella scheme?

On the principle that some places only draft in contractors when the tulip hits the fan you will find some contracts require immediate start. Many will want an earlier start than one month so you could lose out on some contracts.

Really depends on your personal circumstances, how long you copuld afford to be jobless if nothing turns up quickly. Why not stay in job for now and apply for the suitable contracts you find and see how it goes?

1 month is avg of 20 days notice.

you can hand your notice in - your holidays.

I saved 15 days when I took the plunge only had to give one weeks notice because I was owed 15 days

I worked in a bank where a mate I worked with wanted to leave (asap) he was a permie. He spoke to his manager - The dick told him he'd have to work his notice . I rang his bosses boss and told her that person x wants to leave I recomend that he is let go straight away as he is a security risk. He was escorted off the building the same day - His manager had a slating as he did not pick up on this..
