    Relocation

I was wondering if someone could give me some advice.

Okay here goes. I've been offered a role with client A starting next week close to my home in the North West (40 mins by train). Not a brilliant pay rate but decent enough (£200 per day). I haven't signed contracts yet but if I do, I'm only tied to a one weeks notice. The poisition is for 6 months with 6 months extensions available.

I just found out today I've been successful in an early interview but the job is in the South West. Having a 4 month old I really don't want to be away from my family and have considered relocating. The job is initially for 4 months but pays £400 per day with a possiblility of a permenent position at senior mgmt level (£60k per year approx).

Ideally they wanted me to start straight away but understand that I will need time to sort things out. The longest they can hold out for is 6 weeks.

Is it possible to relocate to an area you know nothing about in 6 weeks and would you a) move and risk being stuck without a contract in 4 months and in a place you don't know and have no friends/contacts but which could more than likely lead to a decently paid permie position or b) take the lower paid job and risk being out of work in 6 months but not have the hassle of trying to sell your house, find rental accommodation, and relocate a family.

A or B - which would you choose?

    Choose a job.
    Choose a career.
    Choose a family,
    Choose a ******* big television
Choose washing machines, cars, compact disc players, and electrical tin openers.
Choose good health, low cholesterol and dental insurance.
    Choose fixed-interest mortgage repayments.
    Choose a starter home.
    Choose your friends.
Choose leisure wear and matching luggage.
Choose a three piece suite on hire purchase in a range of ******* fabrics.
Choose DIY and wondering who you are on a Sunday morning.
Choose sitting on that couch watching mind-numbing sprit-crushing game shows stuffing ******* junk food into your mouth.
Choose rotting away at the end of it all, pishing you last in a miserable home nothing more than an embarrassment to the selfish, ****ed-up brats you have spawned to replace yourself.
    Choose your future. Choose life.

A, but then I’d get the hell out if they ask me to go permie. Don't move, find a cheap b&b to sleep.

Wheres C - suck up the monday to thursday away from home crap for a few months until you know how the land lies down there and whether you really will get a decent permie job, and whether or not you would want it.

Personally I wouldn't relocate my family for a contract job which may or may not go for a while, in an area I didn't know and wasn't sure about living in.

Edit. I've relocated a lot, but always to somewhere I actively tried to reloacte too. But I've no idea of the job situation in your neck of the woods either ...

I have done similar to option A. Only it was not internally in the UK.
It was from Denmark to Qatar, after that from Qatar to Switzerland, after that From Switzerland to Germany. Always relocated the whole family.

My first reaction is to go for the better paid role, but I am out of touch with the prospects of subsequent contracts in that area of the UK in your area of work. But an evaluation of that should be taken into account.

Probably A - although the rate offered by client B makes it a toughie.

I would speak to my wife and see what she thought about me working away, but if she felt she couldn't cope with little one (mine is three weeks old) on her own then I wouldn't hesitate to turn down client B. I have decisions like these coming my way shortly - not much work available in my field locally, but have been approached by agents about good roles further away. Whatever you decide, good luck.

I chose not to choose life.

                    I chose Swindon instead.
