Switching off pcs in a hurry...

When you're off to catch a train...

    Not a Good Idea...

Taken until now to get it going again...

I don't swith off PC's or laptops. They break when you switch them on and off too often.

    I just let them sleep.

You obviously don't have my talent for chewing up memory...

...but that is something I like about a Mac, mostly it will recover from even the most outrageous demands on its resources. Like stitching 15 10-Mpixel photos in Photoshop while tweaking another in a different photo app while having 8 mails open, 4 documents in Open Office, and encryption software running on the fly. And browsing CUK. It gets slow, but if you leave it alone then it will come back to you. A PC under the same load will start going to black and refusing even to open the Task Manager, or to shut down.

Leaving your pc on all the time is the equivalent of having a 1 kilowatt electric fire switched on every other hour for almost an hour.

Most pc's (and probably laptops) consume about 400watts of electrickery an hour.

Would you leave you electric fire on for 12 hours a day?

Laptops generally use 20w at idle and up to 80w full tilt, desktops 65w and 250w.

Not worth worrying about too much unless you've got an Alienware 'rig' with an 800w psu running 5 HD's and duel crossfire gfx cards.

              I leave all my PC's on 24/7

              I love Global Warming.

PS I leave my fridge-freezer on all the time too.

                http://mtbest.net/chest_fridge.html

It's been posted before but worth it again, a converted chest freezer used as a fridge that consumes 0.1kWh per day, that's 10x more efficient than a normal fridge.

The only times I've had problems on my Mac has been when running something with a serious memory leak. A logout and login normally solves that.

Just how is it one operating system can be built that performs so much better than the other? You'd think 20 years of development MS would also like to say 'It just works'
