He said he would accept a seat in the Lords and attacked the Tories for protesting to the BBC that his Government role broke its rules on impartiality.

Sir Alan also said Gordon Brown had asked him to become a minister, but he declined, adding: 'I will be a Labour peer, taking the whip and joining the party.'

He insisted suggestions that he had given £1million to Labour were exaggerated, claiming it was nearer £400,000, and refused to rule out giving more. He admitted one of his firms was registered in Jersey, an offshore tax haven, because of its 'less onerous' accounting requirements, adding: 'From a tax point of view, the company has always been managed and controlled in the UK.

He also dismissed any connection between his donations to Labour and Government computer contracts given to his firm Viglen, adding: 'Government contracts can't be awarded on favours.'
