I used to work for a BT project in the IT arm of BT i.e. Tech Mahindra. Due to the company's annual loss I along with many of my colleagues have been asked to resign or we will be relieved from duty effective immediately. We resigned but we were not even paid severance benefits or career assistance. It's been difficult times for us now.

From what I gathered talking to an Indian PM a couple of years ago, it is very much a hire and fire environment over there*. Apparently an employers market, as for every person who doesn't toe the line there are 20 waiting to fill that spot.

Unfortunately he kind of confirmed that their management attitude is to throw bodies at a problem, and as we know, that isn't always the right solution.

Welcome to the world of private enterprise.

For far too long BT has not had to suffer proper competition as opposed to the rest of us. Now that they are having to compete in the real world in a recession they are seeing how unaffordable their pseudo public sector pensions and salaries are. Like so many former public sector companies such as the Post Office, BA and the railways, they are overpaid and overstaffed.

Thanks to decades of strong unionism and job protectionism for the current crisis. The chickens are finally coming home.
