Mission to Mars or spend on Third World Aid?

    http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/sci/tech/8158519.stm

What do we think? It would cost a ridiculous amount of money to send a mission to Mars, but if we scaled back on pointless wars and all pulled together as united nations it could be a defining moment in humanity.
Think of it, everyone huddled around TV sets around the world watching as the first men set foot on Mars.
It seems no matter how much money is spent on aid to Africa etc. there will always be poor starving people, so rather than piss money away creating ever more dependent people who cannot sustain themselves (leading to more deaths, and increased global warming) we could further humanity's reach into space.
Plus you could have a token African in the spaceship, so they'd all be chuffed anyway.

Mars, then Ryanair can ship all the poor people there.

Jesus said "there will be poor always". He was not wrong.

Both... India has a space programme as well as desperate poverty.

Dig deep everyone, Bob Shawadiwadi can’t get to Mars without our help.
Science isn't about why, it's about why not. You ask: why is so much of our science dangerous? I say: why not marry safe science if you love it so much. In fact, why not invent a special safety door that won't hit you in the butt on the way out, because you are fired. - Cave Johnson

            Why no poll?
And what exactly is wrong with an "ad hominem" argument? Dodgy Agent, 16-5-2014

Is there any point going to mars? I mean we got bored going to the moon once we worked out there was nothing to do there, when they started to take golf clubs and a few balls to hit the longest ever golf shot ever then it all got very silly and proved how much a boondoggle the whole thing was.

              Cure malaria or something.

                And their nuclear weapons.

I can't wait for the massive handouts from the new world powers.

You think they might sponsor us to go over there and work for 6 months to earn money to bring back to the UK?

That would create more poverty, the world is already overpopulated.

We'd do better going to Mars where we might learn the first tiny steps towards finding another planet to live on.
