Why does the forum interface 'go funny' sometimes?

Every so often, CUK goes funny on me; the interface plays up. Today is one such day.

    a) The menu bar plays up.

    The menu bar says:

User CP FAQ Members List Calendar New Posts Search Quick Links Log Out
If I click on something it is redrawn to:

User CP FAQ Members List Calendar Search New Posts Mark Forums Read Open Buddy List Log Out
    b) The buttons stop working.

Most of the buttons displayed when entering text simply do not work.

    c) None of the smileys work.

Clicking on a smiley does nothing.

    d) The keyboard shortcuts misbehave.

^I to make text italic opens a bookmarks sidebar.
    Ditto for ^B.
^U for underline displays the page source.

    e) Rebooting sometimes fixed it and sometimes doesn't.

Various other things behave strangely too.

Other applications in other windows behave fine.

Currently running Windows XP SP2 and Firefox v3.5.2 although I've experienced this in Firefox 2 too.

    Any ideas?
My all-time favourite Dilbert cartoon, this is: BTW, a Dumpster is a brand of skip, I think.

I've had this too, using Opera Mini on Symbian - thought it was a quirk of Opera Mini - maybe not!

Never noticed in Firefox, but then it was five years before I noticed the CUK Navigation panel on the right.

The only thing I have noticed, which can be irritating, is that when editing a post the full smiley list is not available.

No problem in Safari on OS X 10.4, or Chrome on Win XP SP 3.
