Men who don't drive

I'm not a regular listener to Womans' Hour but did catch a rather interesting item on the weekend about men who can't/don't drive.

For my own part, I mostly dislike driving, even though I have done it since the age of 17 through pure necessity.

Cars and car-men bore me rigid - even though I can probably fix their carburetor while they haven't the remotest clue about the internals of their latest 'wheels'.

The attitude of women towards male non-drivers was very revealing indeed.

The attitude of men went something along the lines of: "lazy freeloaders who expect to be chauffeured everywhere" or "eccentric ecofascists who want us all to go back to the dark ages".

What does the congregation think?

I take it you drive Mr. P wherever he need to go, and pick him up after the nth+1 pint.

I've spent 6 years living in London, Glasgow, Hamburg, and Eindhoven without a car. It worked fine. For everyday life I used pubic transport, walking, cycling and taxis. For travel outside town, mostly trains, flying when I had to. But I started in each city knowing that I wouldn't have a car, so I chose where to live accordingly. Now I have thought of it but I am a mile up the hill from the shops and the railway station so I don't see dong it.

Once I got my first car, I've never been without one.

Bit like television: I never had one for years, and had more of my life to myself as a result. But once I got one, I've always had one.

I guess they're either lazy, like Mr P, or are communist-cyclists like Expat.

I live within easy walk of shops, train station etc., live by myself, and have two cars. Being on the bench I don't have that many places to be either. And today, I went for a 3 hour drive just for fun.
