    Waiting for security clearance.

So I was offerred this job, and now I'm waiting for security clearance for up to 6 weeks.

During this time, we actually have no security do we?

I mean, the job could fold, the pimp could stitch us up, the security clearance could fail...and we're left with no job, and a 6 week period where we didn't even bother applying for anything else.

Has anyone else ever been in this situation before?

Should we be asking for a retainer?

What rights do we have? (None I'm guessing).

Do you need to be cleared before you're on site? Can you be escorted while awaiting the clearance?

Nah I have to be cleared for this one, else they'd need me escorted everywhere, including the loos!

My advice = carry on looking for work. At least when it comes through you will have the clearance for the future to call upon. If in another job you could decide whether to stay or go once the clearance comes through.

It can take longer than 6 weeks, especially if you have loads of clients in the last 5 years.

Yeah, I know but at least you're on site and productive.

I'd still be looking just in case.

Trying to snap one off while someone waits outside humming isn`t nice.
Neither is not being able to take a break, making a drink when you want to.
Some places won`t let you start until you are cleared, simply to much hassle and note nice.

They haven't asked me about clients - just family, finances, criminal records, that sort of stuff.

Out of curiosity, did they not tell you not to talk about it?

Is there a signed contract? My advice is to keep looking. I have been in a similar situation but with a tulip outcome........

Offered the job, agreed a rate, already had the clearance and had just finished working on the site. The outsourcer (EDS) wanted to redo my clearance which was not required for the client at all (EDS gets a commision for every clearance they do). After waiting 3 months for the clearance to come through, the company had enforced a recruitment freeze and there was therefore no longer a contract for me. They had failed to inform me of this until i chased them when the clearance came thru.

Moral of the story : Never assume you have a contract until you are on site at your desk. Especially if EDS (an HP Company) are involved. Always keep looking.

                    Six weeks my arse!

                    SC can take six months.

Keep your eye out for other roles, but just enjoy the bench time. The role will come though; they are not going to spend £1000's to clear you only to can the role. If anything the work will just stack up leading to more extensions, and having SC is definitely worth a (non-billing) period on the bench.
