    A week is a long time in politics . . .

    Tuesday 1st September
Mr Straw told Sky News: "No such deal was done, no such deal could have been done. I would not have done a deal but I had no power to do a deal.

"And to say to the Libyans 'we'll do a murky deal with you on oil and we'll give you a nod and a wink about the release of Mr Megrahi' - that was not within the jurisdiction of the UK Government.

"Even had it been, we would never have struck that sort of deal."

    Wednesday 2nd September
"There was no conspiracy, no cover-up, no double-dealing, no deal on oil, no attempt to influence Scottish ministers," Mr Brown said.

    Saturday September 05
Jack Straw has admitted that the prospect of trade and oil deals with Libya played a "very big part" in the Government's handling of the Lockerbie bomber case.

    And from today's Times:

Political help behind Libya arms trade, says official

A senior Whitehall official boasted that “high-level political interventions” had enhanced the prospect of arms sales to Libya, three weeks after Britain’s prisoner transfer deal with the regime was ratified.
Behold the warranty -- the bold print giveth and the fine print taketh away.

How did this happen? Who's to blame? Well certainly there are those more responsible than others, and they will be held accountable, but again truth be told, if you're looking for the guilty, you need only look into a mirror.
