If you're 'proactively' doing it then your crawling up the manager's arse.

You've come right out the other side of the forest of irony and ended up in the desert of wrong.

Proactivity is to stop the activity becoming a necessity.

Is that a definition? A bit like preemptively doing something?

Emptying the bin when it's full is active.
Emptying it when it's 1/3 full is proactive.

Fixing a bug before it gets noticed by the customer is proactive in a good way, though I'm sure in many companies you'd not get treated that way...

Contractor: I spotted an important bug and fixed it
PM: was this bug in the bug-tracker?
Contractor: no, but I realised it would...
PM: please stick to your assigned tasks in future, let me decide what's important

Contractor: this would have caused problems later if I had not profylactively fixed it , you are a fooking idiot (no offence like)

Emptying it when it's 1/3 full is a waste of time.
