    The IT Hierarchy

The way I see it, it goes like this:

    1. At the bottom, hardware support
    2. OS/networking support.
    3. Enterprise software set up and config (SAP configurers etc)
    4. Developers (web, applications)
    5. BI specialists (credit risk etc)
    6. Creatives (creators of new languages, OSs)

Outside this hierarchy we have the various non-clever parasites: BAs, PMs etc.

Hmm. At the 2nd bottom is networking support?

Actually what's the point, there's no heirarchy between disciplines, there's hierarchy within them.

OK the super bright creatives are maybe a bit special, but beyond that nope. Most people start of at the bottom in their field and work their way up, occasionally crossing disciplines.

That's the way I see it.

Though I'd definitely put developers closer to the bottom of your list, based on years of dealing with retards who right tulipty applications and try to blame the network for it's poor performance.

Developers have slipped to bottom IMO. Hands-on and face-to-face disciplines move to the top of the pile.

There don't seem to be as many hardware engineers about since the seventies/eighties. Are less people studying it now? Don't we make things any more? There might be a shortage in years to come.

        BTW Agree about developers, snaw.

Who cares, it's the pay hierarchy that matters.

OK, let's put sas's query another way. Which of that lot would we miss most if they were culled tomorrow? I'm tempted to say hardware engineers.

Testers aren't even in his hierarchy but you won't hear me complaining about money.
