    Scottish winter hideaway

I'm looking for any recommendations for a lodge or other hideaway/hidden gem of a location in Scotland in winter/early january.

Plans are to spend 3 days in Edinburgh over Hogmanay/New Year which we have accomodation booked for and then 4 days somewhere in the lower Scottish Highlands.

Only criteria is that it should be somewhere picturesque and no more than 6hrs drive from Manchester. Im thinking of a log cabin or nice inn with log fire and a great view that's nearby to a village that has a good pub restaurant.

    Any ideas?

sounds like you want southwest Scotland, somewhere between Dumfries and Stranrear

    Maybe the Galloway Forest?

        What a lovely thought.

Sitting in a shed whilst a gale force wind and torrential rain lash down with temperatures barely above freezing.

Surely it can be done in 6 hours from Manchester.

Give Liz and Phil a ring, they may have a spare room now that the grandchildren don't come up to grannies anymore. Balmoral can't be far from Manchester.
