    Economics and the Tories

    I have never been Mrs Thatcher's greatest fan, but, as I said in another thread;

"the next government is going to have be at least as nasty as she was, for the simple reason that a huge chunk of Britain's populace goes on ten year benders of living way beyond their means and expect their government to do the same. So we end up with the same old cycle of debt crises, IMF loans, lower credit ratings and a bunch of nasty unfriendly tory barstewards who have to come in and balance the books again. It's not Mrs Thatcher's fault, or the fault of the tory party, but the fault of all those people who don't understand that for every pound spent there has to be a poundsworth of something produced and sold, in fact a little more so as to save for a rainy day."

The next series of governments will have to be more nasty than Thatcher ever was, and that will go on for a generation or so. There will be intervals where a government tries to be nice, but that will just drag out and lengthen the periods where they have to be nasty.

The rich just keep getting richer, and the poor poorer. Eventually there is a revolution.

Mrs Thatcher was an evil witch who liked nothing better than to wreck manufacturing industries and pull the rug from under poor people. I think she ate babies as well.

So how would you deal with Britain's finances now?

She ate babies and laughed at Northerners whilst doing so.

Welcome to the ship of fools

The Tory response would be/will be large scale privitisation and reduced government expenditure. In an economy that produces few exports, government expenditure is the only way to get the economy going, but it would have been far better spent on improving the transport infastructure and producing innovative large-scale energy-generating projects. These are things that would has a positive impact when the economy does start to recover, and they would provide some kind of positive, lasting legacy. Instead, we just seem to be getting more and more unfit-for-purpose IT projects. The Tories will quickly realise that the private sector, even low-wage, low-tech mac-jobs, will not take up the slack

There's lots of ideas to be knocking on with:
              1. Join the euro
              2. Pump more money into public services
              3. Raise tax on banks and rich people to 80%
              4. Sign up to the Lisbon Treaty (true we've done that already but it will take time to reap the benefits)
              5. Encourage millions more workers into the country from abroad
              6. Withdraw from Afganistan and Iraq and Belize
              7. Ban all money movements out of the country to tax havens
              8. Increase surveillance on tax cheats
              9. Mileage tax on cars

The Conservatives will re-introduce slavery to bring down labour costs to compete with the rest of the world. The NHS will be closed down and euthanasia for all those slaves that are incapable of work through lack of ability, sickness, or old age.
How did this happen? Who's to blame? Well certainly there are those more responsible than others, and they will be held accountable, but again truth be told, if you're looking for the guilty, you need only look into a mirror.
