heh heh , clever dogs bum.
you can never be accused of jumping on a band wagon, ever again.

The extent of the changes you propose, even if a majority supported them, would only ever happen in the event of a serious threat to the survival of the nation. i.e. a threat to national survival in a major war (imo)

I disagree on one point. we dont need more jails. we need more tented areas on the sides of the pennines. if tents are good enough for our soldiers in far away places, they are good enough for burglars.

What are the chances that a police officer walking the beat will actually spot a crime being committed?

I agree with cutting red tape, but most police officers would rather spend more time doing real detective and preventative work than randomly walking around just in case they happen to see a crime being committed. The whole concept of having more bobbies on the beat is deeply flawed, does nothing to reduce crime, and is expensive.

The order of the following steps is important (especially step 1) because some of the later steps depend on the earlier steps in order to work.

          Constitution

          1) Withdraw from Europe so that the UK is no longer bound by European laws and can no longer be controlled in any way by Europe (ie stop people taking the UK for a ride at the European court of human rights etc). This one comes first because it paves the way for all the other changes - people would not then be able to go crying to European court to override the rest of the stuff on this list. Human rights are important, but so are the interests of the majority. It's a balance. So lets make up our own laws about that, which we control.

          Immigration

          2) Secure the boarders (ie no more immigration, no more people allowed into the country who do not already have a right to be here.). If the population falls by 1,000,000 then after that, consider allowing one person in for every one that leaves or dies here - ie one out, one in). Any immigrants found sneaking in (e.g. in the back of trucks coming through the channel tunnel) should be escorted straight back to where they came in from... no appeals, no delays, no taking it to European court etc. Those people who have already made it to the UK should be treated with care and respect, as should anyone who is in the UK.

          Law & order

          3) Build more prisons. That's right, build more prisons. None of this bulltulip about letting offenders out early simply because their cells are needed for newly convicted criminals. If there aren't enought spaces... BUILD MORE PRISONS. It's very simple. Build more prisons.

          4) Simplify the legal system and sentancing. 5 years should mean 5 years, not 2.5 years with good behaviour. If they don't behave well, they get time added onto the sentance, never mind being let out early! Offences involving any kind of physical assualt (e.g. beating up. stabbing, glassing, etc) should always be given a tough sentance. Also, put measures in place to stop the compensation culture/blame culture/tossers culture. This should throw out a lot of bulltulip legal cases and free up the courts time to deal with far more important things. Prison guvernors to be incentivised with bonuses for a well run prison (e.g. if something bad happens, such as a racist murder takes place in prison, then the guvernor looses his bonus (and maybe even his job)).

          5) More police on the streets (don't care how it's done - cut red tape & form filling or hire more coppers etc, just get more police on the streets). And when I say "on the streets", I mean walking the beat, not cruising around in brand new cars with the heater and stereo on. That way they might actually see or hear a crime being comitted. Give police the power to stop anyone at any time and confiscate any weapon they are carrying (thinking mainly knives and guns here). Any confiscated weapons to be destroyed (properly destroyed, ie melted down and the metal recycled). "But how would you fund it?" - simple... fine the f*@ker who was caught with the weapon. If they've got no cash, confiscate some of their jewelery or other valuables.

          Politics

          6) Encourage a culture of plain speaking, in society in general but especially in politicians. End the toxic 'Politically Correct' culture that is distorting our society like some kind of cancerous growth. Tell it like it is. In recent years some celebrities have made a name for themseleves and based their career, by apparently being 'controversial' when what they are really doing is simply speaking their mind. Speaking your mind should not be some rare speciality that only the most outrageous celebrity does. It should be something that we all do as a matter of habit, day to day. It should be part of our constitutional rights "we're British and we speak our minds! If you don't like it... TOUGH!".

          Taxes

          7) Simplify the entire tax system (whether high taxes or low taxes is irrelevant to this, just make the damn system simple so that it's easy to administrate. Maybe lay off a load of tax inspectors and re-hire them as coppers (see point 5). If taxes need to be high to pay for all the stuff on this list, at least people know exactly how much they're paying and what it's for. It should all be up front (not sneaked in stealthily in an intelligence-insulting stealth-tax way). Get rid of tax credits. Where is the sense in taxing the less well off, only to give some of it back in complex tax credits? Utter nonsense! Just tax them less to begin with... job done!

          Homes

          8) Build a new city with loads of new houses (take the strain off the property market and reduce crowding in rest of country). Encourage companies to locate their by offering appropriate incentives.

          Education

          9) Bring back corporal punishment in schools (obviously under strict guidlines to ensure it is implemented in a carefully controlled way). This is a tough one. I used to think that caning kids was just plain wrong. But then when I heard about how one kid stabbed another kid in the eye with a pair of scissors, it made me think that corporal punishment was the lesser of two evils. If you disagree, then ask yourself this:

Scenario 1: No corporal punishment. Kids out of control. Eventually one day a kid stabs another kid in the eye with a pair of scissors. If the victim is lucky, they might just get to keep their eye and still have some eyesight. If not, they could be walking around wearing an eye patch for the rest of their life. Either way they've suffered the incredible pain that results from being stabbed in the eye. Just the thought of it makes me want to throw up.

Scenario 2: Corporal punishment used in schools. Kids stay in line because they know they'll get a good whacking if they misbehave. Every now and then some kid gets their arse whacked and has a sore backside for a day or two, after which everything is back to normal.

Now, which would you prefer? What if it was your kid who got stabbed in the eye with scissors? Or look at it another way, how would you feel if someone came to you and said "My daughter has lost an eye because your child stabbed them with a pair of scissors"?

Take steps to foster a culture of respect for teachers (e.g. implement laws to protect them from getting sued if some kid grazes their knee on a school daytrip, give teachers decent salaries, make the kids wear uniforms, no mobile phones allowed in class, ensure good nutrition in the school canteen, etc This is not rocket science, just plain old common sense). Restore accademic standards (ie reverse the 'dumbing down' process). Make sure curriculum emphasizes teaching children to respect people, cultures, religions, and achievements (real achievements such as scientific breakthroughs or excellence in sport or arts (e.g. playing a musical instrument) that have been achieved through hard work, not bulltulip non-achievements like making an idiot of oneself on a reality tv show). Also emphasize the value of hard work, long-term commitment and belief in the self.

          Foreign policy

          10) Stay friends with other countries in Europe (especially the French, Spanish, Germans, Italians), respect their culture and entertain their leaders. Just don't be bound by their laws or 'European' laws. Maintain the 'special relationship' with the USA. Whether or not you agree with their actions, at least the USA takes action, rather than just sitting around hand-wringing and saying how bad a situation is without doing anything positive to solve it. If you're one of those trendy 'America haters', just remember... who bailed us out in WW2 ?? I wasn't even born in WW2 but I'm wised up enough to know that if it weren't for America's help in WW2, I might be speaking German now instead of English! Who would we go to for help if we were getting our arse kicked? That's right... America. Support the USA's 'Starwars' system (or 'Son of Starwars' or whatever it's called. Just get on with implementing it. If the Russians complain, invite them to be a part of it). Respect the eastern cultures (especially those of China, India and Tibet). Eastern culture is very different from Western culture. The East has a lot of great wisdom about life that many Westerners would do well to learn from.

          Transport system

          11) Instead of trying to force people out of their cars by making driving more expensive and more hassle, try an alternative approach: Make public transport so good (ie cheap, efficient, reliable, quick) that people choose to use it rather than drive their cars. The Japanese have had those fantastic bullet trains for decades, and now they're planning something even faster. Why can't we have something like that?

          Exercise

          12) Buy back the school fields that were sold off. Make it compulsory for all able-bodied people over the age of 5 years to do at least two sessions of exercise per week. The sessions must last at least 30 minutes and must be on different dates (ie you can't get away with doing a single 1 hour session per week).

I could go on, but that's enough for the country to suck on for now! And to the nit-pickers... don't be raising trivial bulltulip about "But how are you going to pay for all of this? What about xyz?". Where there is a will, there is a way.

I'd certainly be in favour of bringing back corporal punishment for some people:
                  • Those that can't spell i.e., telling, wise, enough, sentencing, sentence, academic, guidelines, governors, committed, jewellery, themselves or etc. correctly
                  • Those that can't use an apostrophe (or any other punctuation mark for that matter) correctly

                  I could go on, etc.

Some of it sounds good, some doesn't.

There is a sound reason for giving people 5 years and letting them out in 2.5 for good behaviour, for the more sensible ones at least, it ensures good behaviour! If sentences are too low, much better to increase the sentence.

In my view, we should pay less attention to an individual crime and more to the offender's long term behaviour. It is the recidivists who cause a disproportionate amount of crime. Lifting 50 quid's worth of goods from 200 shops is actually a lot worse than breaking into a warehouse and stealing £10000's worth, it costs far more in police and court time and in stress/effort for the shop owners. Yet people who nick small amounts keep getting off.

My idea would be to keep the remission but add all or some of it to the next sentence if they reoffend. The proportion added would depend on how long they have stayed out of trouble and that gives those who attempt to reform an incentive to do so.

On the other hand, if serial petty offenders end up in prison for life so be it. While I tend to agree with the liberals on causes of crime, the primary duty of the law is to protect the innocent. Until somebody invents a real affordable cure for a defective character, prison is the only thing that does the job.
