i was wondering if anyone knows what distance the above two should be from each other to give the tree a fighting chance....i've never had a real tree before, i know, i must be a chav

Get a plastic tree, some of them look pretty good these days (and even M&S sell them)
A lot less hassle plus you can keep it in the loft till next year
PS. I'm not a chavCoffee's for closers -
Keep the tree as far away as possible. Mine goes in the (unheated) conservatory.+50 Xeno Geek Points

On a side note. If you want some real fun after christmas take your tree in the garden and set fire to it. Tip: you need a fair bit of room.
