    Favourite Sci Fi Films?

Ok, a geeky post, but I'll admit that I do enjoy a good sci-fi film. But with so much dross in the genre, what are YOUR favourite / must see sci-fi films?

Feel free to include Fantasy "swords and sorcery" too

    I'm genuinely looking for recommendations
Let's take the "Star Wars", "Star Trek" and "Alien" sagas as givens!

Off the top of my head, here's some of my faves, which don't tire after several viewings

    - Starship Troopers (I can watch it again and again!)
    - Dark Star
    - Contact (Jodie Foster)
    - Bladerunner
    - The Day the Earth Stood Still (1951 version)

2001. The SFX still holds up over 40 years later - check out the BluRay edition...

      In no particular order:
      • Predator - the first one
      • Robocop - the first one
      • The Thing - the John Carpenter version
      • The Thing from Another World - the original 50's movie the John Carpenter version was based on
      • Aliens
      • Star Wars - the original trilogy
      • Starman
      • The Matrix
      • The Terminator 1 & 2

In all likelihood, I would probably add Moon to the list but need to see it a few more times to confirm.

        In no particular order

        Enemy Mine
        2001
Star Wars Trilogy IV-VI (Empire being the best)
        The Abyss
        Mad Max
        Alien
Close Encounters of the Third Kind

Honorable mention: Dune, not because is was particularly good but more because it was probably the best the movie could be while keeping faithful to the book

Never managed to like Blade runner, despite seeing it about 6 times

          WHS, and also:

          Solaris (the 1972 Russian version)

Total Recall (Arnie "I vont to go to Mars" Schwarzenegger)

          I, Robot

Rendezvous with Rama, that *was* due to be made this year and released in 2010, but got canned because of Morgan Freeman's dodgy ticker. What kind of excuse is that?!

Oh well, at least the Dam Busters remake is still on track for 2010.

(And Guy Gibson's dog will apparently be called "nigsy")

In addition to some of those already mentioned, Gattaca.

                  Oh, and Stargate.
