    Contractor Laptop

    ...

Usage: To run CPU and memory intensive apps during the day, and relax with a movie in the evening at the hotel.

What's important: Decent build quality, 15.4" display, 1024MB RAM (max 2GB), quiet fan

    Price: less than EUR 1400.

Biggest unknown: are the glossy displays hard on the eyes with all that light reflection? Are they any better outside?

Narrowed it down to 3 alternatives

    FUJITSU-SIEMENS AMILO M1437G/M1439G

    SONY VGN-FS 315 H

    Milan.

Go for Tosh, the Volvo of the Laptop World.

Boringly reliable, as Fleet may have put it , does what it says on the tin.

Why "PC PRO" Magazine never rates these laptops as number one or even two?
frequently it rates "evesham" laptops as no 1.

The build quality of the Toshibas is a bit suspect these days, plus they look all cheap and plasticy. If I were looking for one today, I'd probably go for a Thinkpad (which would be even better if IBM put a Windows key on, it drives me up the wall not having one ).
Dell always seem to come out pretty well in terms of price/performance, and always do well in the laptop tests. Hopefully my trusty ole' Compaq will serve for a couple more years yet.

I agree with Mordac, I have a Thinkpad T43 and it is the dogs dangalies (sp) apart from it not having a windows key
