So either FF knows you're in the UK or its been set to search .co.uk first or it's scanning your history for timesonline

Quite possibly. It did take longer to resolve when '.co.uk' was omitted.

www.thetimes.co.uk works as it should - countless of pages link back to thetimes.co.uk - only idiot IT person would not ensure that DNS works without www. bit. Amazingly this happens on very large sites
