Just happily accepted a 6 month renewal. However, during the conversation it was mentioned that they would like to make this a permie position at the end of the 6 months.....I told them they couldn't afford me

I've got to agree with diver, thats the sort of comment you make when the 6 months are up.
That way the chances are they won't have a replacement in mind so you'll get another 6 months.
Foot, shot, yourself.Science isn't about why, it's about why not. You ask: why is so much of our science dangerous? I say: why not marry safe science if you love it so much. In fact, why not invent a special safety door that won't hit you in the butt on the way out, because you are fired. - Cave JohnsonComment

SR, the secret is to say, okay, let's do this 6 monther and then sort out a permie position here at the end.
Then stay quiet. Chances are they will forget until your 6 months is up, in which case you say "too late to sort out now, let's do another 6 month contract and sort it out at the end of that."
Keep stringing them along.Comment
