High-speed Chinese train kicks French, Japanese butt

China's new high-speed passenger-train service broke world speed records on its maiden run over the weekend.

According to a report in Monday's Financial Times, the Harmony express train travelled from Guangzhou in Guangdong province to the central-China city of Wuhan - a distance of 1,100km (684mi) - in under three hours.

    ...

China's Harmony express train isn't a mere demonstration project - it's scheduled to make the cross-country trip 56 times per day.

    ...

Tickets aren't cheap, either. First class runs 780 Yuan Renminbi (£71, $114) and second class 490 (£45, $72). Also, the FT points out, the state-run China Southern Airlines has responded to the competition by dropping ticket prices to as low as 250 Yuan Renminbi (£23, $37) for advance reservations.

So, first class ticket on a first class super high speed train going 600 miles costs less than ticket to London much slower train going like 120 miles - and they have more trains per day

Let's wait and see what its Safety Record is like before getting too excited AtW. If it is anything like their Air safety record then they will be keeling over at an alarming rate.

I think you are confusing Indian railways with Chinese - let's wait and see, my guess would be that safety record is pretty good there: this is their top line project and heads will literally roll there if something goes wrong.

Does noone have the heart to break it to you AtW that London is trying to keep you away?

So, the average person will still have to travel third class.

            What about other locations?

The point is: China is introducing cool 21st century things, I bet they've manufactured a lot of parts for those trains also. Meanwhile the UK has got great City that will surely save us all

Britain had its day 100 years ago but it got there by exploiting the rest of the world and that was never going to be sustainable in the long run.

The city has kept the country going over the past fifteen years by being the best in the world but that won't last for ever or even much longer.

So the country needs a replacement or faces terminal decline. Sort of like Italy but without the decent weather.

Lets hope they ban smoking on these trains!!

The rail system is horrendous over there, trains in Thailand are far better.

Have they also got Maglev trains there?

Can't see it catching on in India - At 230 MPH it would be pretty breezy for all the passengers on the roof.
