    geek malware Q

Has anybody else been a victim of sending out the email below to their address list ( via hotmail account ), and then losing their address list. The freebie Avast virus s/w I'm running has done a good job for a few years but I guess may have missed the virus / malware. The problem looks fairly wide spread but I can't see a remedy or proper explanation via google. Another hotmail account using this same laptop looks fine. Is it possible they have hacked into hotmail itself rather than my account ? There is nothing in my Sent folder relating to the email and everything else on the laptop looks OK. I guess I should change my password as a bare minimum !?

    ********** don't click on the link !!!!!!!

Try AVG. Also hotmail is web based so unless you have some weird BHO hijacking your browser I dunno how this happened unless hotmail has been compromised.

Also download Lavasoft Adaware and let that scan your system, as this does rootkits as well.

    Best of luck.

A lot of spam spoofs the sender address. A lot of the more intricate virii harvest e-mail addresses from compromised systems contact lists and then sends mail using its own smtp engine.

Download stinger and do a scan, but my bets would be it's spam. Get someone who's received the e-mail message to forward you the message header (how to extract from hotmail). You can see if it's spam from that as the reply to address will be different to the sender address (spoofed).

This also leads onto the semantics of is it 'virii' or 'viruses', but that's a conversation to be had with a pedant.

Ta for the various replies. I'll try things once I've done kids bath duty.

I would suspect 'spoof' but it is the fact my address book is now blank that has me thinking it is more than that ?!?!?!?
