Large numbers of these laptops are surely not going to get fenced down at Estate Pubs within days of being issued?

Hmm, £300 million for 270,000 laptops??????

      Dumb government, as usual.

You can get a 15" Dell for £300, the broadband for £100/year, and the government should get discounts on both..

More rewards for failure and laziness. Welcome to Britain.

Gah, I've just seen the rules on this, it's basically more free money.

You get your free PC, even if you've already got one: http://www.homeaccess.org.uk/Information-for-parents/

and then you can stick it straight onto ebay to pay for crack.

Why can't they be supplied on loan (to be returnable at the end of three years
, say)? I know the taxpayer wouldn't get any money back at the end but there would not be the temptation for people to sell them and the obsolete models could be passed on to developing countries.

I fear the admin costs involved would cost more than the cost of the laptops.

How about increasing tax free threshold instead to something more reasonable: £12k pa. To make up for shortfall in taxation reduce benefits accordingly - this way working would be viewed as more beneficial.
